Mental health support in schools
Every child deserves to be heard. We provide professional, school-based counselling (CiS) for tamariki in Aotearoa’s most vulnerable communities, ensuring they have access to the mental health support they need.

A targeted, school-based model of care
At the Ted Manson Foundation, we believe strongly in the impacts mental health and wellbeing support can have for tamariki from high-needs communities, dealing with intergenerational trauma and hardship. Our Counselling in Schools initiative is designed to meet tamariki where they are - at school. Many children facing emotional and psychological challenges do not have access to professional support outside of the classroom. By working within the school environment, CiS removes barriers to care, making early intervention possible and providing continuous support in a setting where children feel safe and familiar.

How it works
Dedicated counsellors and clinicians: Skilled professionals work across one or two School Ready participant schools, delivering one-on-one therapeutic interventions tailored to each child’s needs.
A holistic approach: While some children require direct counselling, others benefit from wellbeing initiatives or friendship support. CiS integrates with other school programmes to uplift the entire school community.
Partnerships with specialist services: We collaborate with trusted organisations to bring expert interventions into schools, recognising that different tamariki respond to different therapeutic approaches.
Supporting school readiness: While the School Ready Programme equips tamariki with foundational learning and social skills, CiS ensures those with additional emotional and mental health needs receive specialist care throughout their school years.
The impact of school-based counselling
Tamariki from high-needs communities face adversity and need more than just academic support - they need emotional resilience, coping strategies, and someone they can trust. The impact of CiS is evident in:
Increased school engagement: Students receiving counselling are more likely to stay engaged with learning and participate positively in school life.
Stronger peer relationships: Many tamariki benefit from social skills support, leading to improved friendships and a greater sense of belonging.
Emotional wellbeing and confidence: Counselling helps tamariki process trauma, develop self-esteem, and navigate challenges with confidence.

A commitment to lasting change
The Foundation believes that mental health support should not be a privilege - it should be a given. CiS is more than just a programme, it’s a commitment to the wellbeing of future generations. By providing consistent, professional mental health support in schools, we are creating environments where children can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
